About Ice Hockey?

Ice Hockey is a contact sport played on an Ice Hockey court, which is also known as the Hockey rink. The size of the rink is a fixed 61 metres(200 ft) × 30.5 metres(100 ft), having a corner radius of 8.5 metres(28 ft).

A team of 6 players play from each team including the goalkeeper (called goaltender in this sport). 5 players skate over the ice trying to put the puck into the goal of the opposing team. Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in USA and Canada, along with some countries of Europe. NHL (National Hockey League) is the most popular Ice Hockey League.

History of Ice Hockey World Cup:

The first edition of the Ice Hockey World Cup was in 1996, played between 8 teams and won by the United States. A total of 19 matches were played and 140 goals scored; Brett Hull was the lead scorer with 11 points. The Canada Cup was the tournament replaced to start the Ice Hockey World Cup.

In 2004, NHL sanctioned this event and the second edition of the Ice Hockey World Cup was played 8 years later. Eight teams played at seven different venues. Canada was crowned as the 2004 champions as they defeated Finland in the finals held in Toronto. Fredrik Modin was the lead scorer with 8 points throughout the tournament. Because of the NHL lockout in 2004-05, NHL suspended the Ice Hockey World Cup.

Now, after 12 years, third edition of the Ice Hockey World Cup will be played in Canada.
